We all take some kind of vitamin supplement on a daily basis, but according to studies, almost all the popular brands contain at least one dangerous ingredient. Centrum is the most popular multivitamin supplement in the USA and is produced by the pharmaceutical giant Wyeth. Other popular brands such as Unilever, GlaxoSmithKline or Novartis also produce their own line of vitamin supplements. And, although most people consider them healthy, experts warn that these products are nothing more than additives, synthetic agents, coloring and a bad imitation of vitamins.
According to experts, these products may treat some, but not all nutrient deficiencies. The multivitamin supplements are rarely an extract of edible foods and are synthetic in nature. These synthetic compounds are not absorbed properly in the body, and long-term use has been known to have negative consequences on our health.
Here’s a list of the most dangerous compounds found in multivitamin supplements:
- Soy lecithin;
- Hydrogenated soybean oil;
- GMO egg white proteins;
- GMO animal-based gelatin;
- Synthetic flavoring;
- Ascorbyl palmitate;
- Citric acid;
- Lactic acid;
- Xanthan gum;
- Aspartame (artificial sweetener);
- Petroleum-derived artificial coloring.
Some brands contain even more dangerous compounds including the ones listed below:
Titanium dioxide is a common addition to vitamin supplements and is highly dangerous for our immune system. It is considered a possible carcinogen due to evidence which showed that the compound causes lung cancer in rats exposed to high amounts of it.
Magnesium stearate and stearic acid
Magnesium stearate is present in more than 90% of popular vitamin supplements. It’s actually a magnesium ion added to stearic acid which acts as a lubricating agent for the pills. However, according to a recent study, the compound is highly dangerous for our health, just like stearic acid. This common compound in multivitamin supplements can inhibit the activity of our natural cancer-killing cells (the T-cells) and cause loss of cell function. Stearic acid is most often derived from cottonseed or other hydrogenated oils and due to the fact that it’s a GMO compound, it often contains too much pesticide residue.
Silicon dioxide is a filler in supplements which makes the package weight more and has no beneficial impact on our health.
The Cornucopia Institute recently issued a warning saying that carrageenan can cause inflammation in the digestive tract and colon cancer as well. It can cause symptoms such as IBS, chronic diarrhea, spastic colon and other digestive problems.
Artificial colors such as Blue No. 2 or Red No.40 have been linked to a variety of serious diseases including cancer. Both artificial colors are considered potent neurotoxins.
Besides these compounds, vitamin supplements also contain other carcinogens and harmful compounds such as plasdone products, sodium starch glycolate, propylene glycol, laureth sulfate, talc, yeast extract, Shellac, carnauba wax, benzoic acid, gums, Hydroxy Propyl Cellulose, Croscarmellose, glaze and pregelatinized starch.
